I'm participating in Teal to Heal Cape Breton, a run/walk in support of ovarian cancer and other gynaecological cancers.

Iggy and I plan to do the 5km walk in support of a cause incredibly near and dear to our heart.

In 2005 a lot of things changed very quickly for my family. Without divulging too much, as it's not my direct story to tell, gynaecological cancer has impacted my life in many ways over the last 20 years. Especially now working in healthcare, I have a lot of retrospective reflections as to how things could have been different. When cancer enters the picture, it is a time to lean on others for support – unfortunately back then support, medical advances, and patient care looked a lot different. The direct impact something like Teal to Heal would have made on my family, whether we knew it or not then, is immeasurable.

Watching Dena and the entire Teal to Heal team do such amazing work in our community has been an emotional roller coaster. I’m loving living in a community that supports advocacy, research, and dismantling the stigma that sees women’s health as ‘just women’s problems’ or ‘hormones’. Sometimes having 'no evidence of disease' does not mean the scars disappear physically or mentally. Sometimes gynaecological disease is invisible. Be kind.
