In November 2022, Janelle Tierney was 19 years old, studying a Bachelor of Science and playing for the CAPERS Women's soccer team at Cape Breton University. Everything felt like it had fallen into place - she was living her dream of playing university soccer, while working toward her goal of a career in medicine. That was, until, she injured her hip and had to undergo surgery.
Three weeks post-operation, Janelle woke with pain in her shoulder that got progressively worse and radiated into her lungs, back and chest. After a visit to the emergency department, she was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism and later, a pulmonary infarction.
After being told by specialists that she is lucky to be alive, Janelle is on a mission to share her story and raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of thrombosis, which is a condition that can affect many people. Along with raising awareness, she also has a goal of supporting the Vital Patient-Care Fund at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
